Other Notes:
Bereaved children and young people DO grieve; and they do so with as much intensity and distress as adults. However, they do so in different ways from adults. They may struggle to talk about their grief and their feelings, due to their emotional immaturity.
So, when supporting bereaved children, the aim is to help them find their ‘metaphor’ for grief. In other words, we need to help them find the most appropriate, age-related medium through which they can understand their grief and start to talk about feelings and emotions.
Such mediums could include memory jars, memory boxes, sand trays, drawing & sketching, storyboards, journals, and a host of other craft-oriented outlets.
This course is ideal for teachers, teaching assistants, school chaplains, support workers, parents, and anyone who faces the challenge of supporting a bereaved and distressed child or young person. It will show how to use the mediums in an effective and caring approach to children’s grief; how to develop trust in these situations; and how to communicate with bereaved children and young people through age-related and appropriate language.
