Other Notes:

When supporting bereaved children and young people, one of the main aims is to help them find their “metaphor” for their grief. In other words, we need to help them find the most appropriate medium through which the bereaved child can understand his or her grief and start to talk about feelings and emotions.

One of these mediums is Bibliotherapy. This encompasses the use of fictional books (with themes of death, dying, loss and grief at their centre) in order to help bereaved children & young people come to some form of understanding of their own grief, feelings and the reactions of adults around them.

This is achieved by the young readers identifying with the book’s leading characters, and vicariously sharing their challenges and struggles within the enormity of their loss.

This course is not just for teachers, teaching assistants, learning mentors, and school pastoral staff; but it’s also for any parent or grandparent who wants to effectively and compassionately support their bereaved young family member after the loss of a loved one.
